Intro Post

Hello everyone!

My name is Camille Oemcke and I am a junior in MCAS majoring in mathematics and minoring in economics. After graduation, I am planning on pursuing a career in Data Analytics. I am from San Diego, California, and though I will always love the west coast, I have really enjoyed my time in Boston at BC! (I think I am slowly getting used to the concept of winter and snow…). I am on the Varsity Volleyball team, and being a student-athlete has been a major force in shaping both my collegiate experience and who I am as a person. I also love hiking, rock climbing, waterskiing, and being outdoors! I like pineapple on pizza, prefer dark chocolate over milk, and will drink Starbucks over Dunkin Donuts any day. I consider myself a sunrise/sunset enthusiast, so featured an image of one of my favorite San Diego sunsets.

I initially heard about TechTrek from a classmate who I interned with this summer at a technology startup in Newton. She took the course last spring, and had the most incredible things to say about the program. My business strategy internship at this small, but increasingly successful local company had already sparked my interest in entrepreneurship and innovation. After hearing about TechTrek, I couldn’t wait to apply and be a part of this incredible program!

This experience will be an incredibly unique opportunity. I am so excited both to learn in the classroom and to put my new knowledge and talents to use in Silicon Valley. The companies we will be meeting with are not only impressive, but so many of the stories behind success are truly inspiring. I expect to be challenged by my professors, equally-motivated classmates, and entrepreneurs we meet with. I think it will be very cool to meet different Boston College alumni living and working in Silicon Valley, because it would be amazing to be in their shoes one day. I hope to gain experience in the world of innovation and learn more about what is involved with becoming a successful entrepreneur. I look forward to working hard and learning a lot!

Though every company will be incredible, I think I am most excited for Google. This company has never failed to innovate while being a front-runner in the technology sphere. Most people use the Google search engine, Chrome browser, and many other Google products everyday, sometimes without realizing it. This is also why I am so excited to get a closer look at the company while reading In the Plex, How Google Thinks, Works, and Shapes our Lives this winter break. It will give me insight into the world of Google, its path to success, and the challenges it faces while being so successful.

I am also very excited to visit Apple. The impact this company has had on the mobile world is unparalleled. The evolution of the iPod, iPad, and iPhone, as well as home computers has had a major impact on the technological world, and I can’t wait to see this company in action.

I have two older sisters, and family is the most important aspect of my life. Having my grandparents, parents, and sisters as role models growing up has shaped my morals. values, and identity. This winter break, I am incredibly lucky to be heading to Italy for my sister’s wedding! I am excited to spend time with my family, eat amazing Italian food, and just to get to travel and see the country.

I hope everyone has a great holiday and am looking forward to seeing all of you soon at the start of the semester!

  1. Hi, Camille! I think we have a lot in common. We both like pineapple on pizza, worked for Boston-area technology startups last summer, and find success stories to be inspiring and valuable. Enjoy your trip to Italy! I have been twice and am extremely jealous. If you are heading to Rome, Venice, or Florence, I know you are going to have a blast.

  2. Welcome, Camille! I went on TechTrek this past spring — I’m probably friends with the classmate you interned with 😉 I’ve been to Rome, Florence, and Venice, among other cities — curious which part you’ll be in. Enjoy your trip to Italy!

  3. I look forward to having you on the trip. I’ll be interested to hear what you think of In the Plex. In fact, it’s one of the reasons I did the book assignment. It provides so much more detail about Google’s history than we could ever cover in this class that I just wanted to make sure at least 1-2 people on the trip had the depth of knowledge and could appreciate how far it’s come.

  4. Camille- I hope you had a great time at your sister’s wedding in Italy. I am also excited to visit Google and Apple, it will be interesting to meet their employees and see their own perspective on the companies they work for.
