Hi, #BCSTT! I hope everyone is enjoying some well-deserved time off after a busy fall semester and finals. I know once I boarded my flight home, I felt like I could finally take a breath!
First, a little bit about myself: My name is Julia MacDonald and I am a sophomore in CSOM interested in Information Systems, Business Analytics, and Marketing. A fun fact about that is I actually haven’t declared a concentration yet but I’m *pretty* sure I’m going to choose two of those three options. At least that’s the plan for now! On campus, I am Assistant Director of Campus Engagement for the Campus Activities Board and a marketing intern focusing on brand strategy for BC Dining.
While at BC, I’m a resident of 2K (formally known as the Reservoir Apartments). However, I am originally from Westfield, New Jersey, which is a suburb about 40 minutes outside of New York City. One of the best things about coming home is getting a proper New Jersey bagel or pizza. You can bet I’ve already been taking advantage of this since I’ve been home! Besides the lack of good carbs, there isn’t much I don’t like about Boston. I love exploring this awesome city and taking advantage of all the cool opportunities it presents. It also helps that I’m a big Pats fan (I know, coming from a Jersey girl, that statement seems bizarre).
Three of my passions include food, music, and tech. For the past two summers, I’ve worked at an ice cream store down the Jersey shore and I consider myself somewhat of an aficionado. I’m also a bit of a concert junkie (I saw three last semester with my favorite being Ed Sheeran) and according to Spotify, I listened to 24,491 minutes of music spanning 15 genres in 2017. One of my newest passions is tech and the way it is changing our world. I’ve always been a fan of testing out new gadgets but recently I’ve been exposed to how technology plays a role in the business environment and the career possibilities it offers (if you get the chance, I highly recommend you take Prof. Kane’s ISYS6621 class). This sparked my interest in the companies creating this disruptive tech, as well as in startup culture, and has now brought me to TechTrek!
I am beyond excited for this trip. The reputation of this class on campus is stellar and I think that is for good reason. I can’t believe we are going to get to visit legendary companies like Apple, Google, and Facebook. I start to fangirl a little just thinking about touring their campuses and talking to the people at these industry-leading titans. Because I am really into music, I think Spotify is going to be one of my personal favorites but I’m also really intrigued to go to some of the companies I know less about, like Walmart Labs, and learn more about their digital initiatives. I’m also excited to get exposure to some of the VC firms because I really haven’t had much up to now.
Some of my goals for this class: I want to learn more about how these companies started, where they are, where they are going, and their strengths and weaknesses. This is a potential direction that I might want to pursue with my career, so learning about Silicon Valley and experiencing it first-hand is going to be invaluable (and, I believe, a lot of fun). Also, networking with BC and TechTrek alumni is another amazing opportunity I look forward to. The alumni of this class are incredible and the ones I’ve met were huge advocates that convinced me to take this class. I’m sure after Spring Break this year I will fully understand why and become a spokesperson myself, telling others about how cool TechTrek really is.
I hope you all enjoy the break and I look forward to getting to know you by reading your intro posts. Happy holidays and I can’t wait to see you in the new year!
It’s going to be a good time!
