Tech Trek West 2019,

My name is George Ahlering and I am currently a Junior here at Boston College. I am beyond excited to get to know each of you next semester through this course. Here is a bit about myself:

I am from St. Louis, Missouri, a little over 1,000 miles from Chestnut Hill. But no, I did not grow up on a farm. My experience with startups and entrepreneurship began right in the Gateway to the West. When I was 16, I started a small, online clothing company, which helped me realize my interest in business. St. Louis has a budding entrepreneurial ecosystem (see “The Top 10 Rising Cities For Startups” from Forbes), and is the hometown of Jack Dorsey (founder of Twitter and Square Inc.). This supportive community provided me many opportunities to get involved throughout my high school years, which I will forever be thankful for. Although I love the Midwest, I always knew I wanted to come out to the East Coast after graduating high school. To make a long story short, that is how I ended up at Boston College, and I could not be happier.

I am currently studying Accounting, but hold a keen interest in the technology and startup scenes. In particular, I am interested in the intersection of technology and the retail/consumer products industries (fair warning: I may be writing a lot about companies like Wayfair, Bonobos, Fanatics, Warby Parker, AllBirds, etc.). This interest led me to my internship with a startup clothing company called The Normal Brand in the summer of 2017 in my hometown of St. Louis. This experience allowed me to peek inside the inner workings of a high-growth e-commerce company which only intensified my interests in this area. Right now, I see myself starting off in public accounting auditing firms in the retail/consumer products industry, but spinning off into an ‘in-house’ accounting role at an exciting and innovating firm somewhere down the line.

On the Heights, I am involved with the Marketing Academy of Boston College (MABC) and the Student Admissions Program (SAP). I am the VP of Programming with MABC and a Tour Guide with SAP. I love working with both of these teams to create great experiences for other students.

Outside of the BC Bubble, I enjoy photography and running in 5Ks (with hopes of the Boston Marathon someday). Both of these hobbies help me to fill my free time and relax a bit. Check out my photography portfolio here!

Tech Trek has been on my radar since Freshman year. Like I mentioned before, I have always had an interest in the ‘tech scene’ and have enjoyed being able to visit a ton of companies over the past few years with various clubs/organizations (Google NYC, Amazon Boston, Wayfair, DRIZLY, etc.). On the surface, Tech Trek West seemed like those afternoon trips on steroids which intrigued me. I now know that Tech Trek is so much more than that, and it has made me even more excited for the course!

Please ignore the fact that “Jonathan” is shirtless in his profile picture.

I am not a huge meme person, so I’m not terribly sure if this counts as a meme, but I thought it was funny. I forgot to mention that I am a big fan of animated films from the late 90’s through the 2012-ish (Disney, Pixar, Dreamworks, you name it).

The Twitter account I will be using for class is @georgeahlering.

Anyways, that does it from me! I can’t wait to read everyone else’s posts and get to know you all. See you on the first day of class! – George
