Selfie: Yun Tong

Hi everyone!

Can’t believe it’s already 2019! Hope you guys have had an amazing break so far! My name is Yun Tong (it’s pronounced as “YOON”) and I’m currently a sophomore studying Information Systems and Business Analytics with a minor in Computer Science. I’m from Shanghai, China but I’ve spent the last five and a half years in Massachusetts since I went to high school in Hingham, MA. Although I’ve lived around here for quite a while, I’m still very much a city person since my hometown is one of the busiest cities in the world with a population of 24 million. Therefore, when I was applying to colleges, I was so sure that I was going to go to school either in California (for the good weather and food) or New York City (since I’m used to the city life). To all my friends and family’s surprise, I ended up choosing BC for its liberal arts education and beautiful campus. However, I don’t regret this decision at all because I got to know some great faculty members and friends and have some of the most unforgettable experiences here.

I live really close to the river that runs across Shanghai, and this is the night view of the skyline.

Some of my hobbies are tennis (though I haven’t played since college), percussion/drums, and drinking bubble tea (if you haven’t tried it it’s the best thing in the world). I also love traveling because my dad has been taking me around the world since as early as I can remember. I have been to 24 countries and my dream is to set foot on all continents. Some of the places I want to visit the most next are Australia, Brazil, England, Kenya (for the safari), and hopefully Antarctica. My favorite travel destination so far is definitely Svalbard, Norway because I got to see many wild animals including polar bears!

One of the most unreal experiences of my life.

On campus, I’m involved in Elements (an undergraduate interdisciplinary research journal), AC clubs (mainly SEASA & CSA), SAP etc… I haven’t been as active as I wanted to be last semester because my PULSE service placements are on Fridays and Saturdays (thus missing all the fun). Therefore, I’ll try to get better at time management and be more involved in the upcoming semester.

In terms of this class, I’m super excited to learn about business management, strategies and more on the tech industry and, of course, the trip to San Francisco over spring break which is definitely going to be one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life (fun fact – we leave the day after my birthday). I can’t wait to learn about not only the topics I’m already interested in such as sharing economy and AI, but also the ones that I’ve had less exposure to like blockchain and cryptocurrencies. I was very lost in what career to pursue coming into college, but in the past year I slowly discovered my interest in the tech side of business like technology consulting and data analytics. I know that this class is going to provide me with great insights into the most important and discussed topics of the areas in which I’m interested, and I am also going to learn a lot from everyone in this class who are majoring in various disciplines. I’m also very pumped about getting to know everyone better since my friend who took TTW last year told me that she got to form a pretty tight community with all of her classmates.

Since I’m back home and it’s pretty annoying having to break through the “Great Fire Wall of China”, I’m just going to put one of the memes I saved during finals week. I’m looking forward to meeting everyone soon! Have a relaxing rest of break!
