Selfie | Jane Ewald

Hi everyone!  My name is Jane Ewald and I am a junior in CSOM studying Marketing and Business Analytics. I have spent my entire life growing up in Chatham, New Jersey.  This past semester I studied abroad at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia.  Although I’m very happy to be back home, I left Australia in the middle of their summer and was not too thrilled to trade in beach weather for freezing temperatures.

This is me with one of my “mates” in Australia

One of the many reasons I fell in love with Australia was because of all the amazing oceanside pools.  My absolute favorite pool was the Bondi Icebergs (picture below).  I’ve spent 11 years of my life swimming competitively, so pools are almost a second home for me. Here’s a fun fact about my swimming career: my high school swim team was undefeated for 106 meets in a row!    Last year, I decided to transition my competitive swimming career into a new aquatic sport: water polo.  I have the swimming part down, however, having never played a contact sport, I’m still coming to terms with fighting off girls while treading water with a ball in one hand.

When I’m not swimming or doing school work, I like to relax by drawing, painting, or searching Pinterest for any DIY projects I can try out.  I also express my creativity by designing posters and media for the Heightsmen, an a capella group at BC.  Additionally, a few of my fellow artist friends and I started a new club on campus called Canvases of Care.  We meet twice a week to create pieces of art, which are donated at the end of the semester to a local nursing home.  Outside of these groups, I also participate in the Student Admissions Program and Project Swim.

Two of my sophomore year roommates were members of the Tech Trek West 2018 class.  They were always fascinated by the companies they were analyzing, which really motivated me to learn more about the tech industry as well.  I often had discussions with them about the things they learned in Tech Trek.  These discussions were so interesting to me because I was hearing about cutting edge business strategies and start up secrets that I had never heard of before.  After hearing about all the exciting class material and their amazing trip to Silicon Valley, I knew I wanted to experience Tech Trek West for myself.

I was also inspired to join the Tech Trek community after taking an interesting course abroad called Consumer Centric Innovation.  In this course, we discussed the many modern approaches to targeting consumers and developing products.  I greatly enjoyed learning about these techniques and putting my creative abilities to the test in a new way by experimenting with innovative ideas on real world issues.  One of the companies that we worked directly with as part of the class was Sydney’s professional soccer team, Sydney FC.  I learned about new sports marketing approaches and sports technology, such as jerseys equipped with digital tickets and money to buy game snacks.   This class inspired me to learn more about today’s most innovative marketing strategies and products.  I am eager to expand on my knowledge and experiences from this class by learning about other major corporations and the strategies behind their success.

As a result of Consumer Centric Innovation, I recently became interested in product development as a career path.  I am interested in developing products because I would be able to use my analytic skills to analyze consumer needs while also expressing my creativity through designing the products.  I chose to read the book “Hooked” by Nir Eyal in order to learn more about the creation of habit forming products.   I am hoping to learn more in Tech Trek about how successful startups create popular consumer products.  Additionally, I look forward to learning about innovative marketing strategies and exploring other marketing career paths.

I laugh every time I see this meme

I am super excited to meet all of you and start the Tech Trek West journey!

  1. Hi Jane!
My name is Maddie Kirby, and I relate to you on several accounts! It was my roommate that took TechTrek that started my interest in the course also. Also, I just sent in my application for study abroad and I applied to the University of New South Wales. I would love to hear more about your experience! It looks amazing, and I am unsure where BC will approve me for yet, but that was one of my locations. “Hooked” sounds like a very interesting book, I’ll have to check it out! Look forward to meeting you back on Campus!

  2. Hi Jane
Canvases of Care sounds like an awesome club and I would love to learn more about it! Although I wouldn’t consider myself an artist, I enjoy simple drawing and doing collages to decorate my room.
