Hi everyone! My name is Madison (Maddie) Kirby and I am a sophomore in the Carroll School of Management pursuing concentrations in Finance and Information Systems. I grew up in Boulder, Colorado and I absolutely love it there—not to say that I do not also love it in Boston. However, Boulder was an amazing place to grow up, and it will always hold a special place in my heart.
Here you can see that Boulder is arguably the most beautiful place in the world. I kind of love to brag about it. This is Chautauqua Park where a lot of the hiking trails begin.
Yes I do ski, which is the first question everyone asks, and I also love to hike. These activities are likely only special to me because of where I grew up. Me and my brother are in the picture above; he is 21 and goes to Northeastern which is nice to have him close by. My family has also recently got into boating, and I have found that I really love wake surfing. Additionally, I grew up playing competitive ice hockey, which was a huge part of my life prior to college. I really loved it, but it consumed most of my life. I decided to pursue club hockey in college to open up more time, but still continue the sport I love.
Even though I am from Colorado, my dad grew up in Boston and raised me and my brother to be all Boston sports fans. I would like to clarify that I am not a bandwagon fan, but rather was raised a Patriots fan before I even knew what football was. One of the best days of my life was Super Bowl LI when I witnessed the greatest comeback of all time. I went from crying, in a mature manner, at halftime, unable to enjoy Lady Gaga’s halftime show, to jumping up and down screaming like a little girl with my dad. All I have to say is: Tom Brady is the GOAT and the Patriots are amazing.
To go into a little more about my college experience so far, I love BC! It has been an amazing experience for me, and I feel like it is flying by way too quickly. Aside from being on the club hockey team, I am also a part of Smart Women Securities which has taught me more about investing my own personal money, which I hope to begin doing in the near future. I also started to work at the call center this last semester, a much needed source of money. I currently live in Walsh, which has been the best. A little drab at first, but we decorated extensively to make it more comfortable. After living on Newton last year, Walsh is a dream come true! Over break, I applied to study abroad next year in Barcelona and Australia, and am excited to see how that turns out.
As far as my expectations for TechTrek, I am so excited. One of my roommates went on TechTrek East last semester and after talking to her, I had to go. After her trip I asked her all about it and she could not stop saying the word amazing. After beginning a sentence about a company, she would cut off to: “It was just amazing.” Even before the trip, I found everything she was learning and writing about to be so interesting, and I couldn’t wait for the opportunity to apply to TechTrek West. I’m constantly hearing about Silicon Valley, and am so excited to see what the culture and work life is like there. The energy in the companies seems so appealing.
I have been narrowing my interest to the tech industry, but I am hoping that this experience will help me to understand the different possibilities, and what I am searching for as a career path. I think that prior to the trip will be challenging with a lot of information to grasp, but I am glad that it is so demanding. I wouldn’t want to be meeting with people from these companies unless I was prepared to the fullest degree. Although it is intimidating, I think this will be a great area of growth for me, and I am thankful for all the extensive preparation we will do. I remember when my roommate was preparing for her presentation, and I have never seen such a professional presentation from a college student before. And she said that others were much better than hers! I am excited to learn new presentation techniques, and to give a much better presentation than those I have given in the past. I don’t think that I will dread this classwork because I find the material so interesting, which is good to say compared to some of my other courses.
The Office is definitely my favorite show, so of course my meme had to be from there. I figured with the focus on technology and innovation this one was relevant, and it made me laugh.
I can’t wait to get back on campus, and to begin this exciting experience. I hope everyone enjoys what is left of their break, and hope to see you soon!
